Fangirl Fridays: Nicole Peeler

Professor

Nicole D. Peeler is an Assistant Professor of English at Seaton Hill University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She teaches both graduate and undergraduate classes, and teaches one of the only MFA’s specializing in Popular Fiction in the country. She received a Bachelor of Arts in 2000 from Boston University and her Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh in 2008. This is terribly impressive, but barely scratches the surface of the Nicole I have come to know (and fangirl over).

Jane True

It was hard to see Jane True end

Nicole Peeler is the author of the Jane True series. That’s how I first came to know her.  The first Jane True book, Tempest Rising, was published in 2009. It is the story of a girl named Jane who doesn’t quite fit in with the rest of the world, and for very good reason: she is only half –human. She works in a bookstore, loves to cook and loves to swim...a lot. Growing up in the small town of Rockabill, Maine, she is unaware of her mother’s heritage because she and her father were abandoned many years before. Gradually she comes to terms with the truth and discovers hidden strengths and new friends that help her save the world. The final book in the series, Tempest Reborn, was published in May 2013, and I was sad to see the last of Jane.

 Facebook

I don’t know about you, but I “like” Facebook and Twitter pages of authors, musicians and celebrities I admire in order to get updates on upcoming events. Some of the pages are obviously handled by fans or public relations firms. The ones I tend to enjoy the most are the personal ones used by the actual celebrity. Nicole’s posts are frequently funny, entertaining and heartwarming. She doesn’t seem to take herself too seriously, and willingly shares her views on a variety of subjects without sounding preachy. Nicole shares many updates about her daily life on Facebook, complete with photos. It’s plain to see Nicole enjoys life and lives each day to the fullest. Whether she’s working, traveling, exercising or spending time with friends, Nicole invariably posts something that brightens my day.

Food

Nicole is a bit of a foodie. She frequently posts foodporn on Facebook. I appreciate that. Whether you have cooked yourself or are at a restaurant and are about to consume a great meal, that plate will be nothing but a distant memory if you don’t stop and snap a photo. Sharing food with friends and family is something that I think is very special. Have I mentioned how much I like seeing yummy food pop up on my newsfeed?

Denise Townsend

A few months ago Nicole asked her Facebook fans if they would be willing to read a short story by Denise Townsend and offer their comments and impressions. Unbenownst to me at the time, “Denise Townsend” is Nicole’s pen name for her “Ocean Songs” erotic novels. With heart pounding, I contacted her and said (oh so coolly) that I would love to help. This is a small victory for someone who is terminally shy. I was beyond excited when I received a message from her saying I was one of the lucky people who had been chosen. I immediately contacted my fellow Saucy Wenches to share my excitement (read: squee excessively and loudly). Once she emailed the story, I eagerly started reading and tried to think of intelligent comments. Here is a selfie of me with the autographed book she sent me as a thank you.

The League of Reluctant Adults

Nicole belongs to a group of PNR and UF authors who blog, attend conventions and (probably) get up to shennanigans together at said conventions. Sounds like a fun bunch to me. I’ve even read some of their books.

Mario Acevedo, Michele Bardsley, Sonya Bateman, Dakota Cassidy, Carolyn Crane, Molly Harper, Kevin Hearne, Mark Henry, Stacia Kane, Jackie Kessler, J.F. Lewis, Daniel Marks, Richelle Mead, Kelly Meding, Allison Pang, Nicole Peeler, Kat Richardson, Michelle Rowen, Diana Rowland, Jeanne C. Stein, K.A. Stewart, Anton Strout, and Jaye Wells.

New Book

Recently she released some good news: she has a new book deal for a fantasy novel about a young woman cursed to be a jinn and fighting for her freedom. I’m looking forward to reading about her newest heroine, Leila. We haven’t been given a publication date, though.

I like to think Nicole imparts a little of her own awesomeness into her characters. They are multi-faceted, quirky, intelligent, funny, hardworking and courageous – just like she is.

Nicole Peeler is totally fabulous!

  2. Thanks keiyah, I'm glad you liked it. I was kind of nervous, because I was pretty sure she'd be reading it. Me, writing a post about an English professor/author - eeek!
