What the Wenches Are Reading

Click through to see what we're reading this week!

Angela: This week it was all about historical mysteries. I read the fantastic The Seeker (Damian Seeker #1) by S.G. MacLean. Set in the 17th century under the rule of Oliver Cromwell, it as a fascinating read and I really enjoyed the fact that 21st century sensibilities weren’t in the book. Intriguing mystery and Seeker is an interesting character. Then I moved onto Where the Dead Lie (Sebastian St. Cyr #12) by C.S. Harris. This was the most harrowing and horrific book of the series to date. Compelling as always. As the layers of the mystery are unravelled we glimpse human depravity and the hunt for the murderer is on! Both books were 5/5 for me. (Head Wench Editorial: Folks, Angela doesn't give out five stars, so when she does, it's worth looking into!)

Anne: I’m switching back and forth between fanfiction and White Hot, by Ilona Andrews. I can’t seem to focus on one thing. I’m also still listening to Order of the Phoenix.

Barb: I didn't read anything I want to admit to this past week. I have been bingeing Orange Is The New Black and catching up on The Originals. I don't know what I'm going to do with the rest of my life after I finish OITNB tonight. Any suggestions?

Donna: I just picked up A Wrinkle in Time for the first time in a couple of weeks. I would really like to finish it this week. If I get a little quiet time, I should be able to finish up.

Kathi: This week, I finished Investigating the Heart and Goodnight, Sweetheart, a light, romantic suspense series by a local author. These were short, diverting stories with characters that I enjoyed right from the beginning. Then I wanted something a bit more complex with more visual richness, yet still comforting and captivating. I found The Rose Garden lurking on my e-reader. Now I’m completely immersed in a time travel romance set on the beautiful Cornish coast, complete with smuggling Jacobite rebels. (Overtones of Outlander and Poldark, can’t go wrong with those!) It has been a while since I was so emotionally entangled and engrossed in a story that I could forget about real life (a real bitch recently) and read into the wee hours, and I’m relieved that I’ve found my happy place again.

I also attended Al Franken’s book signing, which included an autographed copy of his new book Giant of the Senate. My husband isn’t much of a reader; he researches projects, but otherwise he has read a half dozen Montana fishing short stories and one co-worker’s novel in all the years I’ve known him. He was surprised when they handed him a book, and then he was like a kid with a new toy. He held onto it all night and wouldn’t let me put it in my bag even at dinner. He even started reading it! (My friend says it’s a great book, by the way, informative, funny, and hopeful. I’ve got the audio book in my treadmill TBR queue.)

Merit:  I’ve read Ravenheart (Crossbreed #2) by Dannika Dark. I like Dannika Dark’s writing, the interesting mix of characters and their special abilities, the different take on the sups: vampires, mages, and more sups. After reading some reviews about the author, I understood I better read her first urban fantasy series, Mageri, as Crossbreed is connected to the Mageri world. So I’m reading that series’s first book, Sterling, which is a delightful read so far. Definitely recommended for hot summer days and nights.

Zee: Slow reading this week. I've been reading Agatha Christie's Nemesis. The Miss Marple mysteries are the only Christies I haven't religiously read. And I have to say being in the head of an old English lady isn't exactly exciting. But still. The mystery is intriguing.
